Helen Veronica (Vera) Bennett, née Gould
(12th July 1937 - 9th February 2006)
I wish to set up this Tribute Fund in loving memory of my Mum, Helen, as a means of celebrating her life. It is also a way of honouring Helen's memory by supporting the Clatterbridge Cancer Research Trust to tackle an indiscriminate and unforgiving disease.
HELEN'S STORY
When Mum was first diagnosed with lung cancer in the autumn of 2005, her immediate reaction was to show concern for the rest of her family with a clear conviction that she was going to beat this so that she would not be a burden on us. She started chemotherapy at Clatterbridge in December 2005, and she always did her utmost to hide her pain so that we would not be worried. Although we knew the tumour was such that Mum didn't have too long, the initial hope was that the Chemotherapy would add some time to her life. Everything seemed to be going well until she suffered a massive stroke in January 2006 and was admitted to Fazakerley Hospital in Liverpool. We were able to meet with Mum's request for her to be taken home and cared for by her family. She passed away not too much longer after this on 9th February 2006.
She had always been an inspiration to all seven of her children as well as her grandchildren and great grand children. Her love, generosity, selflessness, humour and continual support of her family and friends made her special in everyone's eyes. Her tireless social organising for her friends and colleagues at Littlewoods Pools is still greatly acknowledged by those who enjoyed many a good evening over the years.
Mum's passing was dignified with only those around her bedside who meant most to her, her family. The gap in our lives since her passing is as immeasurable as time. Mum showed great strength and courage to the end trying to ensure that there was little impact on those of us caring for her.
Stephen has chosen to set up this tribute fund in Helen's memory and in the hope of helping to fund further research into cancer. The staff and volunteers at both Clatterbridge and Fazakerley were fantastic in their care and consideration shown to Mum. The family fully acknowledge the contribution both sets of staff made in making Mum's last few weeks as comfortable as possible. Setting up the fund and previous donations is just our small way of contribution to finding a cure for this awful disease.
All donations given in Helen's memory will used to help fund the research into cancer taking place in the J.K.Douglas Laboratories.
